Sales Target No Longer Required for the IEC Practicum Course

Earlier, we have stated that the grade for the IC 6998 E-Commerce Practicum would be determined by the Sales Target, i.e. one million baht for the grade of A. However, there are now several good reasons to cancel such a requirement. Some of the reasons are given below, not in the order of importance.

The first reason is that the Thai Parliament has failed to pass the so-called “E-Commerce Law” by the end of the year 2000 as earlier expected by all concerned and the lack of the law has a negative effect on e-commerce development in Thailand.

The second reason is that Nasdaq index has gone down from about 5000 to about 3200. Thus, investors are now more careful in investing in Cybershops. Nobody knows when the next up-cycle will be. It could take only a year or several years.

The third reason is that many DotCom’s have gone down the drain, starting with Boo.com and so on. Thus, the faith in DotCom’s is decreasing.

The fourth reason is that no Certification Authority has been established in Thailand, making it less attractive, for the time being, to do e-commerce in the country.

The above reasons have convinced us to cancel the policy of requiring Sales Target for IC 6998 E-Commerce Practicum. The grade will be determined in the usual fashion, i.e. by the quality of the Project, e.g. business model, originality, web design, accuracy of the contents, attractiveness of the webs, the report, the presentation, etc.

Regardless of the mentioned problems, Internet and e-commerce are here to stay and will definitely grow.
There may be a shift from “Click and Click” (virtual shop) to “Brick and Click” (regular shop adopting e-commerce) but both of them require qualified Internet and E-Commerce specialists.
